Alghero Airport Facts

Alghero Airport was built during the last world war as a military airport. In the years following runways and ramps were built onto the airport as more and more people began to travel commercially after the war. The first air terminal was a hanger used in the war, and it was transformed for leisure travel.
It wasnt until 1968 when a real terminal was built and the runway was improved and increased in length from 2000 meters to over 3000 meters.
In the war military activities and pilot training took place at Alghero Airport. The Basic Flying School were the training school of choice. Due to this historical fact, and the traditional celebration of the pilots that trained at Alghero airport, the Alitalia Flying School was introduced.
During the 1980s Alghero airport become exclusively a civil airport. The military activities were not continued, but always remembered as a tradition.
In the early 90s Alghero airport was not in a good position, with not very many flights taking place. In spite of tourism increasing in the 60s and 70s, the surrounding area was late in developing as a civil place, support was given to other airports instead.
The north area of Sardinia, specifically the north western one lived half of the 90s with a strong willingness to get support from local sectors and institutions. This proved to be mildly successful for Alghero Airport but still not stable.
In this uncertain state of affairs the province began a new direction with the airport. This new way of thinking introduced the SO.GE.A.AL SpA (The new management of Alghero Airport) and the Sardinia region also gave strong support, and the public financial company also entered into the investments of the airport.
